Syria and Iraq have initialed an agreement to open two free trade zones on each side of the border. Syria expects the zones to attract domestic and Arab investments to build an industrial base that would provide employment. Most importantly, from the Syrian perspective, the new free trade agreements will generate transit shipment in the Syria ports heading for Iraq.
